Substitutions

Substitutions let a team replace players on the field during stoppages, within limits set by the competition and the laws.

A substitute may enter only during a stoppage and with the referee's permission. The player leaving must leave at the nearest boundary unless the referee directs otherwise; the substitute enters at the halfway line.

Team A plans five substitutions. At a throw-in in the second half, the coach signals a change: midfielder #8 jogs to the touchline and forward #19 enters after the fourth official confirms the swap.
