Penalty shootout

A shootout decides a winner when a knockout match is still tied after regulation and any extra time, using alternating kicks from the penalty mark.

Teams take turns at the penalty mark with a set number of takers per round—often five each to start. The team with more goals after those kicks wins if the other cannot catch up.

After extra time ends 0–0, Team A and Team B take five penalties each. Team A leads 4–3 after five; Team B's fifth taker must score to stay alive.
