Penalty kick

A penalty is a direct free kick from the penalty mark awarded when a defending player commits a punishable offence inside their own penalty area.

The ball is placed on the penalty mark, 11 metres from the goal line. Only the goalkeeper and the taker remain in the penalty area until the kick is taken; other players wait outside and cannot enter early.

Team A attacks inside Team B's box. A defender clips an attacker’s legs without playing the ball. The referee points to the spot. Team A's regular taker places the ball on the mark; the goalkeeper stays on the line until the kick.
