Extra time
Extra time is an additional period played in some knockout matches when the score is level after 90 minutes to determine a winner.
Competition rules decide whether extra time exists. When used, it typically has two halves of shorter length—often 15 minutes each—with a short break between them and a kick-off by the team entitled under the rules.
Team A and Team B finish 1–1 after 90 minutes in a cup quarter-final. They play two 15-minute extra-time halves. Team B scores in the second period and wins 2–1 without needing penalties.
