Football substitutions explained

A substitution replaces one player on the pitch with a teammate from the bench. Coaches use swaps to manage fatigue, adjust tactics, or respond to injuries. The number of allowed changes and stoppage procedures depend on the competition—always check the rules for your league.

The player leaving must exit at the nearest boundary unless the referee directs otherwise; the substitute enters only after the outgoing player is off and with the official’s signal. Substituted outfield players cannot return in standard eleven-a-side football.

Many leagues now allow five substitutions per team in a match, often across a limited number of stoppage windows plus half-time. Older formats with three changes still exist in some competitions.
