Football formations explained

A formation is a shorthand for starting structure: four defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards in a 4-3-3, for example. It is a template, not a rigid grid—players move, roles overlap, and coaches adjust shape minute by minute. Barxad lineups show the chosen shape so you can compare plans before kick-off.

Formation strings list outfield lines from defence to attack. The goalkeeper is omitted, so “4-3-3” means four in the back line, three in midfield, and three in attack. Variants like 4-2-3-1 add a row for attacking midfielders behind a lone striker.

Back fours often split into two centre-backs and full-backs who provide width. Back threes use wing-backs to cover the flanks when the middle is crowded. Compactness between lines reduces space for opponents; a high line risks balls in behind.
